The term Open and Distance Learning is otherwise known as the ODL system.

According to the term, it is a combination of two different ideologies in the field of education, they are; Distance education and Open learning.  

What does the acronym ODL mean?

The acronym ODL means full, Open, and Distance Learning System.

An educational system in which teachers are the instructors are at a distance from the learners.

This educational system is characterized by studying whereby student can study at their own pace.

The ODL is seen as a learning process whereby the use of a variety of media is capitalized on to deliver classes to students or learners from various parts of the world.

What does Distance learning mean in simple terms?

As the discussion continues, distance learning can be seen as learning at a distance. Here, the teacher and the students are not in the same place.

Distance learning may as well be seen as an advanced part-time system.

In distance learning, both the teacher and the students are at a distance. So the question is if the teacher and the student are at a distance, how does learning take place?

This leads us to the next paragraph.

How does learning take place in distance education?

Learning in distance learning depends heavily on the use of various media to get across classes and instructions to students.

History has it that Sir., Isaac Pitman happens to be the first officially recognized individual who attempted distance education using correspondence courses in shorthand during the 1840s.

Sir. Isaac Pitman’s attempt was a success as he could teach shorthand by the use of mail.

Open learning could be seen as a learning system that is characterized by openness.

The learning materials can be downloaded freely online. Access to this learning system comes with little or no stress for aspiring learners.

Research has proven that the correspondence stage in the ODL system happens to position itself as the earliest form of correspondence education.

After the correspondence stage is the Second stage.

What is the second stage in the ODL System?

The second stage in the ODL system is seen as the era where radio was introduced to aid distance learning.

History has it that the first distance learning, with the aid of radio, was officially first aired in the year 1916.

As we all know, that thing has a humble beginning, so as the use of radio in the ODL system.

History has it that the use of radio to foster distance learning became a global advantage in the year 1925.

What is the third stage in the ODL System?

The third stage in the ODL system is characterized by immense technological advancement in mechanical and electronic devices and satellites.
